About us
Welcome to The Southern Story
Preserving Heritage. Empowering Artisans. Designing the Future.
Our Story
Behind The Southern Story are three passionate designers: Gowdham, Vignesh, and Shahul. Our journey began at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), where we completed our Master of Design. It was during this time—and through various immersive projects across the country—that we discovered our shared, deep-rooted passion for Indian handicrafts.
As designers, we were captivated not just by the aesthetics of these traditional crafts, but by the stories, the culture, and the hands that make them. We realized that the true magic of design lies at the grassroots.
What We Do
At The Southern Story, we believe in co-creation. We work closely on the ground with highly skilled traditional artisans to create our products. By blending our contemporary design sensibilities with their generational techniques, we create unique, handcrafted pieces that honor India’s rich cultural heritage while fitting beautifully into modern lifestyles. We don't just source products; we build relationships, ensuring that every piece we create tells a story of collaboration, respect, and fair trade.
Our Vision: The South Indian Craft Village
Our ambitions extend far beyond the products we design today. Our ultimate vision is to build the South Indian Craft Village—a living, breathing sanctuary dedicated entirely to the heritage of South India.
We envision a cultural epicenter where:
All South Indian crafts and artisans are brought together in one place.
Visitors can truly experience and learn traditional crafts directly from the master artisans who have perfected them over lifetimes.
The essence of South Indian culture can be felt in every corner of the village, from the architecture to the art, creating a deeply immersive cultural experience.
We are on a mission to build a space where art is not just seen, but lived.
Join us on this journey as we weave, carve, and design the next chapter of The Southern Story.
